What NOT to Wear for Your Next Headshot

(From a Friendly Photographer Who’s Seen It All)

Hey there! If you're getting ready for a new headshot—first off, amazing! A fresh photo can really make you feel confident and show the world who you are. But here’s the thing: what you wear matters more than most people think.

As someone who’s photographed hundreds of awesome people right here in Orlando, I’ve learned what works… and what definitely doesn’t. So let me save you a little stress with this list of wardrobe "don'ts" before you step in front of the camera.

Of course, if you choose an outfit from this “don’t” list but think it will work, bring it along and we’ll discuss whether it’s a go or no-go. 🤔

1. Loud Prints & Big Logos

Your face should do all the talking—not your shirt. Busy patterns and bold branding pull attention away from your expression. Let’s talk though, sometimes this can be a good thing.

2. Yellow and Burgundy

Separately, they’re fine. Together, these colors can cast weird tones onto your skin. Nobody wants to look like they’ve had a long night.

3. Super Low-Cut or Really Casual Tops

Keep it polished! Think of your headshot like a first date with your career—make it count.

4. Clothes That Don't Fit Well

If you're tugging at tight sleeves or swimming in extra fabric, your discomfort will show. Go for outfits that fit just right and let you relax.

5. Sheer or Delicate Fabrics

What looks great in person might not translate so well on camera. Stick with solid, structured materials that hold their shape.

6. Big, Flashy Jewelry

Statement pieces tend to… well, make a statement. But your headshot should be about you, not your accessories.

7. Too Much Makeup

Trust me, less is more. Cameras and editing work magic—there’s no need to go full glam unless that’s your everyday vibe.

8. Short Sleeves

They tend to crop awkwardly in close-up shots. Long sleeves or three-quarter sleeves keep things sleek and balanced.
